Neil Anderson will be leading a walk around Melbourne City, venturing along the Yarra and taking in some of the laneways. 

Meet at the Federation Square Melbourne Visitor Centre. 

Anticipated itinerary follows.

Walking route and some possible photo opportunities:

Fed Square:
Photo opportunities include people sitting on, or walking up or down the steps on the Flinders Street side of Fed Square; using the elevated area of Fed Square to capture candid’s of people walking on the ground level, and patterns including the facade of Fed Square buildings

Hosier Lane:
Early to mid afternoon there are generally plenty of people in Hosier Lane, and maybe an artist or two doing some painting on the walls. Look to capture any artists at “work”. Generally there are plenty of people posing for photos (selfies or photos taken by their friends) with graffiti/artwork as a backdrop. Look for candid photos of a person or a small group of people posing in front of graffiti/artwork. If members are interested, level 3 of a carpark overlooks Hosier Lane, and some interesting photos can be taken. 

Arts Centre and Surrounding Areas:
Plenty of architectural photos and some candid people photo opportunities exist. The water window of NGV can be used for creative images of a person walking past or a child putting their hands against the water/glass

Southbank:
In addition to an afternoon tea break, there are a number of architectural and candid photo opportunities

Birrarung Marr: 
Opportunities include Federation Bells (very good if the sun is out to “model” the bells or provide a silhouette of a number of bells against the late afternoon light), the “Angel” structure and maybe using this structure to frame the boat sheds or Southbank, and candid photos of people enjoying the ambience of sitting by, or a leisurely stroll along, the Yarra River. 

My favourite lens for taking city scene/candid photos is a 24 - 120 mm, however, many lens are suitable.

I always carry a polariser filter, and a Neutral Density (ND ten stop) filter.

I have a few ideas for some creative images that could be explored: slow shutter speeds, images taken with a glass ball in front of the lens.

If showers are forecast, I would suggest we still do the City Walk as there are plenty of reflection opportunities, and people with umbrellas! Remember, Umbrellas is our set subject for the competition entries due 26 Sept.
