Competition Themes 2021

During 2021 we challenge our members with six (6) competitions throughout the year and an "End Of Year" competition at year's end.

All members are encouraged to take photos for the purpose of entering the competition rather than trawling their catalogue for images that match the set theme.  The purpose of the competitions is to inspire creativity and to challenge members to produce quality images for the purpose of entry. With each set subject we will also include an Open category pool. In the open category you are permitted to enter any image for consideration.

We typically have both Print and Digital formats; however, during 2020 we could not accept print entries due to the COVID Lockdown in Victoria, and at time of writing (Dec 1, 2020), we're unsure how this will affect the 2021 competitions. At present we believe we will be able to offer both formats; but we'll make a final determination at the start of the next season.

1. Street Photography

Is a non-formalized genre of photography that features subjects in candid situations within public places such as streets, parks, beaches, malls, political conventions and other associated settings. Images can often be ironic or emotionally detached from subject matter, focusing instead on a particular context or detail. Framing and timing are key aspects of the craft, with the aim of creating images at a decisive or poignant moment (Definition via the APJA).

Entries due: February 9th, 2021 (our first meeting back)
Judging: Mach 9th, 2021

2. Monochrome

An image is considered to be Monochrome only if it gives the impression of having no colour (i.e. contains only shades of grey which can include pure black and pure white) OR it gives the impression of being a greyscale image that has been toned in one colour across the entire image. (For example, by Sepia, red, gold, etc.) A greyscale or multi-coloured image modified or giving the impression of having been modified by partial toning, multi-toning or by the inclusion of spot colouring does not meet the definition of monochrome and shall be classified as a Colour Work (Definition via the APJA).

Entries due: March 23rd, 2021
Judging: April 27th, 2021

3. Old Buildings

A building older than 50 years or may be abandoned or it can be a building or structure that has some kind of 'historic value', i.e. people in the present are connected to it via past events in some way.

Entries due: May 11th, 2021
Judging: June 8th, 2021

4. Creative

Creative or experimental photographs display a novel effect because of an unusual combination of objects and /or unusual viewpoint. Photographs in which the images have been modified during or after exposure by using an experimental technique are also eligible in Creative/Experimental sections. The photograph must always have a basic photographic image. Digital manipulation processes may be employed provided the original photograph was exposed by the entrant (Definition via the APJA).

Entries due: June 22nd, 2021
Judging: July 27th, 2021

5. Macro

A form of close-up photography where the captured subject is presented at a ratio of 1:1 or greater. Typically a specialised Macro lens is used, though the result may also be achieved through the use of extension tubes, macro filters, and/or reverse mounting your lens. The aim is to show enhanced details in common subjects that we may otherwise not notice.

Entries due: August 10th, 2021
Judging: September 14th, 2021

6. Intimate Landscapes

An “intimate landscape” is one in which you’re picking out and isolating one small part of the scene around you.  Eliot Porter is generally credited with coining the term as it was the title of a 1979 exhibit of his photos at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. See the work of Eliot Porter, and Photo Rangers, who offers a workshop on the subject.

See the notes from Dale's presentation for more information.

Entries due: September 28th, 2021
Judging: October 26th, 2021
